Micaela Fitzsimmons
My work as a printmaker and textile artist explores repetition and movement. I am drawn to the ambiguous nature of silhouettes, and inspired by the symbolism found in the iconography of textiles from ancient cultures. I love the grid – sometimes embracing its formal constraints, sometimes disrupting its rigid structure. An etching press is my favorite tool and is used to create multiple collagraph images. When pieced together, the subtle differences of each print create a sense of movement. The prints are incorporated with hand-dyed and discharged fabrics, scraps and hand stitching.
