Ralph Beney
My inspirations come from the fabric; seldom do I use a design, and when I do, numerous changes occur as the piece evolves. Because I often do not work from a drawing, the composition is an illusion; I create an image as I work with it, and respond to what has gone before. What begins as an additive process, the layering of the ‘collage’, develops as areas are cut away, embellished, and highlighted. The composition evolves until ‘done’.
Designing and constructing have always been my expressive outlets. As I have developed and matured as an artist, I have become more introspective in what I explore and develop; intuition is respected and responded to. If an idea doesn’t ‘work’, there are always the scissors! Less can be more, depending on what you do with it.
