Hilary Rice
As a self-taught textile artist, I am keenly aware of how much of my past experiences have accumulated to make me the artist I am today… time spent in my father’s woodworking shop taught me how to think creatively; my classical music training is evident in the essence of my artwork, as seen in the flowing line; my strong sense of connection to the divine in my life forms the majority of the subject matter. With fibre as the basis of my work, I am able to freely combine an array of textiles, techniques and materials, often allowing the experimental results to direct my actions. I am in awe of the world around me, more specifically to the sacred. I respond to this in my artwork, feeling grounded and at the same time illuminated. When I am working on a piece, it feels as though my soul is singing in harmony with the rest of my being, often accompanied by a sense of meditation. Art making, for me, is a way of connecting with the world, a way of connecting what is inside, with what is outside. My work touches and links me to the holy.
